Are you ready for the marriage?
As I ask this question most people immediately think about the wedding! No not talking about the flowers, the chapel, the bridesmaids, the tuxedo, the hair, the reception – I’m sure you have those all figured out. After all you’ve been planning all or most parts of the wedding all your lives. Have you given the same or any thoughts to the actual marriage? Have you gone down this road before? Would you head to a far away unknown destination without any directions?
If your answer to all the above is no then read on. When we join ourselves to another in a marriage or long term committed stable relationship we go down a path that most of us haven’t traveled before. How then do we expect to travel this road without any guidance, toolkit, preparation or planning? As a professional in any sphere of life whatsoever, you must know the value of studying and preparing for any venture we want to undertake. Some of us have 3 masters (yes, I’m a bit crazy – don’t ask me why!) others have a PHD! All of us took driving lessons and familiarised ourselves with the Highway Code. We know people who are taking business classes, trading classes, doing self-thought studies and much more just to ensure they are prepared and ready for the venture they are about to undertake. Why then do we think getting coached and educated about marriage is any different. Right from the old days when couples were about to get married they received guidance in some way, shape or form. The men were spoken to by other men in the family and women in most cultures taught certain tips and tricks during the beautification process – whether or not this was sufficient is another study on its own. These days, to reduce the heartache and divorce rates a number of reputable organizations such as Mr and Mrs Bonds and other partners of ours have marriage preparation workshops. This is a time for couples to spend some time together learning, considering their future and building a toolkit they can use for the journey ahead. On our workshops we equip couples with knowledge about different topics and equip you with tools to deal with everyday topics, underlined and deep-seated issues and prepare you for problems you may not even be aware may be ahead of you, couples do exercises with their partners, some group chat and are educated about resources – books, blogs, courses that would enable further growth in your relationship. So for you, your family, your friend or client – let’s work together to ensure everyone is ready.
